Saharawi students, workers of Phosboucraâ, and unemployed graduates have organized a week of activities from the 22nd to the 29th of September 2001 in El Aaiun on the topic "Let us never forget, let us always remember". The event is organized in coordination with the Saharawi human rights advocates at the main office of the FVJSAH (Sahara Truth and Justice Forum).
The program began on Saturday, September 22, 2001 with a commemorative exhibition of photos and documents on the riots of 1999, the launch of a fundraising event to benefit Saharawi political prisoners, and a round table discussion on the subject "Before and after: situation of those sectors of society who participated in the uprising of 1999".
On Monday, September 24, 2001, the "Day of the Student", focused on the subject of union and resistance including an exhibition of reports prepared by Saharawi students in Moroccan universities and a debate around the subject "The Saharawi students' movement: reality and perspectives".
Guided tours of the exhibitions and collection of funds for the support of the political prisoners were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 25 and 26, 2001.
A popular gathering in commemoration of the second anniversary of the uprising "September 1999" is planned for Thursday, September 27, 2001, on the topic "Let us never forget, let us always remember."
Events planned include testimonies of Saharawi victims of torture, recitation of poems in commemoration of the uprising, songs, reading of letters, and official statements of solidarity with the political prisoners.
On Friday, September 28, 2001, a colloquium on human rights in Western Sahara will discuss the topic "To put an end to humans rights violations in Western Sahara." There will be discussions on human rights education, the forced disappearance of persons, human rights activists in the Sahara, the experiences of
the "FVJSAH" and the "Coordinating Committee of Victims of Forced Disappearances," the uprising of El Aaiún in the context of the rule of law and human rights, as well as an analysis of several cases of human rights violations.
The subject "Without rest while our fellow countrymen remain in prison" will be discussed on Saturday, the 29th of September 2001, "The Day of the Political Prisoner." There will be visits to Saharawi political prisoners in El Aaiún prison, as well as a gathering for solidarity. Former Saharawi prisoners, who were
abducted and spent between two and four months in prison due to their participation in the uprising, will offer testimonies, as well as letters and official press releases declaring solidarity with the political prisoners.
